Stepwell #4,
|
The piece to the right, for all I can tell only titled Stepwell #4, is a piece with in a set of images called Water. The set is detailing different and unique places throughout the world that are effected by water or how humans have used the strength of water to shape their civilizations. Now back to the point of this write up, the specific piece that I will be analyzing. The shot appears to be a architectural, almost aerial shot, that is taken in a 4:3 ratio, landscape view. All of the lighting is clearly natural due it being a picture a huge man-made structure yet the lack of highlight in the image make me believe that it has had editing in post. There is areas of high contrast all around the stairs, the doorways, and most angles that create dark patches that bring out the detail of each individual step. The color of the image in total does not vary that much, sticking with a dark grayish pallet. The leading lines are very clear in this piece. The edges of the stepwell take your eyes clearly to the bottom, to possible some trash that has gathered up there. There is also the lines that are created by the many rows of stairs that lead in almost every direction giving off a possible M.C.Escher vibe. This specific stepwell was probably chosen because of the sense of abandonment that it gives off, with the trash a the base and dirt on the walls. This a great example of what his intention for these pieces are, an example of what humans can do to nature for the universal resource, water. This entire pit was hollowed out and emptied. Then simply forgotten with time.
